Many people out there imagine that the life of a flight attendant is one that if filled with fun, and one in which there are no challenges. I had similar illusions when I first started working as a flight attendant. But, over the years, I have come to realize that much as the job may indeed be enjoyable, it also has its fair share of challenges.
One major challenge I face as a flight attendant is in that my social life is badly disrupted by the constant travel. In other words, I am unable to have a normal social life. This is unlike the case in earlier years, when I held a ‘normal’ job – you know, a 9 to 5 position for which I admittedly got a rather meager paycheck through Securitasepay (at www.securitasepay.com). As a flight attendant, the paycheck is bigger, but in exchange for it, I have to sacrifice a lot in terms of my social life.
Another major challenge I face, as a flight attendant, is in that I often have to deal with very difficult passengers. There are folks who simply have no appreciation of the role that a flight attendant is meant to play. There are folks who seem to have this impression that all flight attendants are ‘pretty young things’ available for all sorts of after-work escapades. It gets very complicated, especially when you also consider that one of the rules in our line of work is that we have to ‘entertain’ the passengers, and we are never supposed to be rude to the passengers. The challenge always comes up when you try to figure out how to be assertive in a nice way, without being rude to a passenger who is clearly crossing the boundary.
Yet another major challenge I face, as a flight attendant, is in that I have to navigate through very complex workplace politics. The workplace politics come into play in a variety of ways. Something as simple as the question of booking a hotel room (upon getting to a certain destination) can bring about huge difficulties, as there are very many vested interests in play. There is also the fact that the numbers of people who want to take the flight attendant jobs are so huge — which means that one has to do a lot of bootlicking, to keep the job.
